Immediately after the Mexican War, a Pueblo Indian company served with the Volunteers of New Mexico. Under the command of Bvt. Lieutenant-Colonel JM Washington, the Pueblos participated in an expedition against the Navajos from August 22 to September 22, 1849. Almost all the Indian names in the service records of the company are Spanish, such as Juan Domingo, Salvador Andres, Francisco Garcia , and Lorenzo Duran, suggesting that many Pueblos have assimilated into the local Mexican culture. |
