Another cultural practice modified over time is the making of war moccasins. In the Indian tradition, a warrior went into battle with a new pair of moccasins embroidered by a female member of his family.
This practice continues today with the moccasin project, although donors do not know where their gifts go. Sponsored by the National Native American Veterans Association and the American Indian Chamber of Commerce, the moccasin project involves making and sending moccasins to soldiers currently on mission. This allows them to stay connected with their traditional culture.
