Frank Brito was born August 24, 1877 Pinos Altos . He attended the local school and became an apprentice printer and minor.

May 6 , 1898, Frank and his brother Jose enlisted as volunteers in the 1st American Volunteer Cavalry Regiment , known as the Rough Riders to fight in the Spanish-American War .

They were sent to training in San Antonio, Texas and then transferred to the camp in Tampa, Florida .

Frank knew how to read , write and speak in English and Spanish. Therefore, he was chosen to deal with potential Spanish prisoners .

 

At the end of the war, Frank was sent to Camp Wikoff in New York with his regiment to treat diseases such as malaria and dysentery. Frank received his discharge from the army September 15, 1898 .

 

His brother will enroll again in the army and went missing in the Philippines.

 

Frank returned to his job as a miner and was five years in prison for killing his wife's sister . On his release from prison, he will follow the route of the protection of the law and even became Sheriff in Las Cruces.

 

Rehired in the National Guard, he left the expedition against Pancho Villa in Mexico in 1916.

 

He died April 22, 1973 being one of the last two survivors of the Spanish- American War .
