February 10, 1519, the conquistador Hernan Cortes left Cuba, Spanish colony, with 11 ships, 450 soldiers, one hundred sailors, 16 horses and 14 cannons.

  April 21, Cortes landed near the present city of Veracruz and made contact with the Totonac, people subject to the Aztecs. He understands that he can make allies among the Indians.

Cortes founded the city of Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz in May and leaves a garrison of 150 men. To avoid reverse, wrecked his ships.
